Award-winning actress Dolly De Leon, a BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee, shared her experiences and insights during “Beyond Talent: Dolly De Leon on Craft, Career and What’s Next,” an exclusive media conversation presented by CSA for the Philippine press. The event offered journalists a closer look at the career and perspective of one of the most internationally accomplished Filipino actors today.
De Leon has become a symbol of Filipino excellence on the world stage, moving seamlessly from acclaimed independent films to major Hollywood and streaming projects. Her journey, marked by a historic run of awards and nominations, continues to break new ground for Filipino artists globally.
Asked about the weight of representing the Philippines abroad, De Leon candidly shared, “It used to feel like a burden, but I’ve learned to relax and enjoy it. Now, I see myself as representing not just Filipinos, but women, Asians, women of age, and every struggling artist in our country.”
Her life has transformed since her breakout role as Abigail in the film Triangle of Sadness in 2022. The role earned her major international acclaim, including the Swedish Guldbagge Award, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award, and historic nominations as the first Filipino for both a Golden Globe and BAFTA. “Now I can just focus on the work and enjoy my job,” she said. “Before, I had to worry about so many things, especially as a mother of four, but now I get to work with people I love.”
Since then, De Leon has built an even more impressive resume. She stars as Detective Gonzalez in Apple TV+’s Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, voices royal twins in Season 2 of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, and appears in Nine Perfect Strangers. Her film credits now include Between the Temples, Ghostlight, and Jackpot!, as well as a voice role in DreamWorks Animation’s Philippine mythology-inspired Forgotten Island.
For aspiring Filipino artists, De Leon’s advice is simple but powerful: “Keep working, even if you’re not getting jobs yet. Read scripts, rehearse with friends, and watch and study great performances. Acting is doing, so always put yourself out there and learn.”
When it comes to choosing roles, De Leon prioritizes connection and authenticity. “If I can relate to the character and the script moves me, that’s enough. It also matters to me if the filmmaker’s style matches mine. The right script and people make a project truly special.”
