A new film is putting the spotlight on HIV awareness in Oriental Mindoro, inspired by the rising number of cases in the province. “Behind The Smile,” directed by Lawrence Roxas, is more than just a story for the screen—it is a heartfelt advocacy project aimed at educating communities and breaking the silence around HIV.
The film is a collaborative effort, produced by GO Films and EVTR Trading and Construction, and brings together a talented cast led by Ejay Falcon. Falcon, who also hails from Mindoro, did not hesitate to join the project after learning about its message. For him, this film was not just another acting job. “When I heard about the focus on HIV, I knew it was timely and needed,” Falcon shared. “As an actor, I don’t just take any role for the sake of work. I want to be part of something that means something.”
Director Roxas explained that the idea for the film came from seeing the alarming rise of HIV cases, particularly in Calapan City. “When we presented the project to our producers, they immediately saw its importance,” he said. Roxas hopes the film will help spark conversations about prevention and encourage more people to learn about the realities of HIV.
The story follows Elijah, a hardworking student secretly living with HIV while supporting his younger sister and navigating a challenging family life. On the school rooftop, Elijah befriends Nikki, a top student overwhelmed by pressure and anxiety. Their lives intertwine with Mia, a woman living with HIV who faces her own struggles after being abandoned by her husband. Together, they find hope and healing, showing that compassion and friendship can make a difference even in the darkest times.
Falcon is especially proud that the entire project was created in Mindoro, led by Mindoreños and filmed in their own province. “It means a lot to me that this film was made by people from Mindoro and shot in our home,” he said. “For many residents, it was their first time seeing a movie being filmed, and they got to be part of something special.”
The cast also includes Jennica Garcia, BJ “Tolits” Forbes, Mike Lloren, and newcomer Dana Alexa. With support from the Calapan City government, Roxas and the team hope “Behind The Smile” will reach audiences across the country, encouraging more open conversations about HIV and the importance of support, prevention, and education.
At its core, “Behind The Smile” is a story of perseverance and hope. It reminds viewers that strength often comes from facing challenges together and helping each other rise above them. Through its honest storytelling and local roots, the film aims to inspire change and compassion—one smile at a time.
