Rising Filipino pop-rock band Nextone debuted their latest single, “Nagkulang,” with a live performance at Rico’s Bar and Restaurant, signaling their continued push to blend retro grooves with modern alternative rock. Managed by Sony Music Philippines, the group aims to connect with young audiences through relatable stories and catchy, guitar-driven sounds.
Formed during the pandemic by brothers Ezekiel (lead vocals and guitars) and Elijah del Rosario (bass), Nextone expanded its lineup with college friends Anton "Ant" Laron (guitars, backing vocals) and Alean Soto (drums) from De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde. Their music draws inspiration from the university and city landscape, gaining traction with singles that echo the experiences of Filipino youth.
“‘Nagkulang’ is mostly about self-doubt after a relationship ends,” Elijah explained. “It’s that feeling where you blame yourself or wonder if you did something wrong, even if you didn’t. The song explores overthinking and self-reflection.”
As a new band, the members see their role in OPM as giving voice to the struggles and joys of today’s youth. “We want to speak to people our age so they know they’re not alone in what they’re going through. Hopefully, we can also add some fun to OPM,” they shared.
Nextone’s sound has evolved since their debut, especially with Ant joining the group. “We used to be three; now with two guitarists, our ideas have expanded. Studying music production at Benilde has also helped us grow in writing and sound,” said Elijah.
Musically, the band credits influences like The Beatles and Bruno Mars (for Ezekiel, Elijah, and Alean), while Ant draws inspiration from J-Pop. The members also honed their craft covering classic Pinoy, disco, and rock songs.
Their goals for the coming years include performing at major events like Baguio’s Cozy Cove, Paskuhan sa UST, UP Fair, Aurora Music Festival, and the Wish Bus. “We know our place in the industry, and we’re still growing, so a solo concert isn’t in the plans yet, but it’s a dream. For now, we’re happy supporting other younger bands too,” they said.
Balancing music and school, the members manage their schedules with fewer class units and support from their families. As advice to aspiring musicians, Elijah said, “Build your foundation first and don’t rely on others.” Ezekiel added, “Never stop practicing, even in tough times—always treat everything as a lesson.”
Reflecting on their journey, Elijah noted, “It’s surprising how our sound and songwriting have evolved and how we found our unique style. Even Alean was surprised by how different we sounded after joining.”
With “Nagkulang,” Nextone continues to carve out a space in the OPM scene, ready to reach more listeners and bring their fresh take on Filipino pop-rock to the forefront.
