Horror Franchise “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” Returns Stronger Than Ever at MMFF 2025

The legendary “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” franchise is back and bigger than ever at the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival. The newest installment, “Shake, Rattle, and Roll: Evil Origins,” premiered on December 25 and immediately set a new standard, achieving the highest opening day for a Filipino horror film in over a decade.

Now in its 17th installment, the series shows no signs of slowing down. Audiences enthusiastically filled theaters on opening day, prompting cinemas nationwide to add more screenings to meet the overwhelming demand from fans eager for the latest thrills and chills.

“Evil Origins” has captivated both new and longtime viewers with its innovative approach—this time, weaving a single central story through its three terrifying episodes. The film’s fresh cast of stars has also gained attention, with audiences praising the unexpected plot twists and standout performances.

Critics are just as impressed. Hannah Mallorca of Inquirer.net highlights the film’s enduring appeal, noting, “’Shake, Rattle, and Roll: Evil Origins’ is an enjoyable film that reminds viewers why the horror anthology is here to stay. Despite its horrific elements, it bridges talent across different generations of actors, with its mainstays and veterans passing the Scream King and Queen titles to their successors.”

Mark Angelo Ching of PEP commends the series’ bold new direction: “Ultimately, SRR: Evil Origins proves there is still so much life in this franchise… a bold experiment that manages to be a solid, entertaining return to form.”

Rhea Manila Santos of PUSH ABS-CBN calls it “the scariest one to date,” promising, “From its opening scene up until the finale episode, ‘Evil Origins’ promises to keep your horror-loving heart happy, with lots of effective jump scares, scary monsters, and violent, in-your-face death scenes.”

With audiences and critics in agreement, “Shake, Rattle, and Roll: Evil Origins” is a must-watch this MMFF season.

The film features a star-studded cast led by Richard Gutierrez, Ivana Alawi, Carla Abellana, Janice de Belen, Manilyn Reynes, Loisa Andalio, Francine Diaz, Seth Fedelin, Fyang Smith, JM Ibarra, Dustin Yu, Ysabel Ortega, and Ashley Ortega, alongside Ara Mina, Arlene Muhlach, Alex Calleja, Karina Bautista, Sassa Gurl, Matt Lozano, and many more. Directed by Shugo Praico, Joey De Guzman, and Ian Lorenos, this latest chapter proves that the iconic horror series is far from finished.
