Filipino alternative rock band Calein is reintroducing its emotional anthem “Oras” with a remastered version, six years after the song’s original release in March 2020. The updated track, now available on streaming platforms, aims to capture both longtime fans and new listeners with enhanced clarity and fullness, while preserving the heartfelt essence that first resonated with audiences.
Originally, “Oras” was a watershed moment for the band. The launch event at Social House in Makati drew an outpouring of support, with appearances from artists like Unique Salonga, Arthur Nery, and One Click Straight. “I was surprised that so many people came to support us,” recalls vocalist and songwriter John Dale “JD” Mustacho. But just days later, the pandemic brought live performances and the band’s promotional plans to a halt.
“We didn’t really get to promote it properly, so most of what we did became online content,” JD shares. Drummer Benjo Criste reflects, “The fire was there, but when the pandemic happened, everything was cut short.” For Calein, the remaster represents a second chance. As JD puts it, “I wanted to give the song new life and give the band a clear path this time.”
The remaster, crafted by Jan Aries Agadier Fuertez, stays true to the original recording and arrangement but delivers a richer and more defined sound. “We didn’t change anything about the song because we wanted to keep its identity and emotions,” JD explains. Bassist Oliver Salaysay adds, “The vocals are crisper, and the sound is wider. It feels clearer.”
“Oras” began as a story of unspoken affection, written after JD’s personal experience of inviting a crush to a gig—only to discover she arrived with her boyfriend. “That was where the first line of the song came from,” he says. Over time, the meaning of the song has grown with the band. “Before, it was about someone else. Now, it feels more like a hidden love for myself,” JD reflects.
For Benjo, the track captures a sense of nostalgia. “When you listen to it and close your eyes, the music takes you back. It reminds you of your younger self,” he shares. The newly remastered “Oras” coincides with a fresh chapter for Calein, now composed of JD Mustacho, Oliver Salaysay, and Benjo Criste. “This version of Calein feels fresh and more mature,” JD says. “We have a clearer path now. But the sound, the heart, and the identity are still there.”
Oliver highlights the opportunity for the song to reach new audiences. “It’s perfect timing for those who haven’t heard Calein’s music yet.” Benjo hopes longtime fans will reflect on how they’ve grown since first hearing the track. “I hope they remember how they felt the first time they heard it and see how far they’ve come.”
Ultimately, the band’s goal is for “Oras” to move listeners—whether through happiness, longing, or nostalgia. “As long as they feel something, that’s already the reward for us,” JD concludes.
