Plump Blossom, the Philippines’ first AI-assisted full-length animated musical film, opened in theaters nationwide on September 23, 2026, introducing audiences to a vibrant world inspired by ancient China and blending Filipino creativity with emerging technology.
Produced by Kapitana Entertainment Media and helmed by writer-director Rossana Hwang, the film’s debut marks a milestone in local animation and arrives amid ongoing industry debates over the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. The MTRCB rated Plump Blossom G, and the film features a story of self-acceptance and courage that aims to resonate with both children and adults.
The story follows Princess Ruo Hua, voiced by Candice Tan, a food-loving royal who secretly learns to cook in her palace’s kitchens. Her life changes when she discovers an injured general, voiced by Don Puno, setting the stage for an unlikely romance and a celebration of body positivity.
The setting, inspired by the Tang Dynasty’s beauty ideals, offers a refreshing take on traditional princess narratives. Director Hwang shared, “I wanted to create a plump princess inspired by the Tang era—a princess who loves to eat, who is considered beautiful in her own world.”
The film features original songs sung by Paulina Yeung and Rafael Sundayan, with melodies and orchestral scores inspired by classic Chinese motifs. Some musical numbers, such as “Wait for Me” and “Under One Moon,” are catchy and linger after the credits roll.
The voice cast also includes Gutch Gutierrez as Chef Bao, Chad Williams as General Feathers, Yeng Her as Yuan Yuan, and Audie Gemora as the Emperor. Supporting characters like a talking messenger pigeon and a royal Pekingese dog provide fun and memorable moments.
At a special screening at Glorietta 4 in Makati City, Hwang reflected on the challenging journey to bring the film to the big screen. “No one believed in us because we were being pitted against DreamWorks’ ‘Forgotten Island,’” she said, adding that skepticism over the use of AI was a constant hurdle.
Don Puno praised the collaborative spirit behind the production, stating, “Just because something is AI doesn’t mean there aren’t humans behind it putting their heart and soul into it. It’s a really special film for us.”
Chad Williams, the voice of General Feathers, encouraged families to see the film together: “It’s a good, clean moral movie. It is something you can take your whole family to.”
While the plot treads familiar territory, Plump Blossom’s strengths lie in its cultural setting, positive message, and musical approach. The film’s soundtrack is now available on major streaming platforms, allowing audiences to revisit its heartfelt themes and melodies even after the credits roll.
